Judge Orders Salary Seizure of Argentine Deputy over Land Dispute

Judge Santiago Morán, head of the 3rd Civil Court in Bariloche, ordered a preventive embargo on the salary and half-year bonus of national deputy for La Libertad Avanza, Lorena Villaverde.

The measure was taken within the framework of a lawsuit for damages and losses arising from the failure to deliver a plot of land on the coast of Río Negro. According to the Argentine News Agency, the embargo aims to cover the sum of 40.5 million pesos claimed by a party who asserts they paid for a lot via a certified sales contract but never received possession of the property.

The judicial resolution has been sent to the Chamber of Deputies to ensure the withholdings are made until the specified amount is covered.

Litigation Details and Background

This lawsuit refers to the "Tajamar" land development, located in Las Grutas, where plots were sold in installments during 2020.

Deputy's Defense

In similar proceedings, Villaverde argued that the delays in infrastructure delivery were a consequence of restrictions imposed during the pandemic.

Other Cases

There is another case in San Antonio Oeste where a claim for 100 million pesos in compensation is being made for an identical situation.

Resignation from the Senate

The judicial report recalls that the legislator had to recently resign her seat in the Senate due to a case linked to drug trafficking she faced in the United States.

The magistrate considered that there are sufficient legal grounds for the precautionary measure due to "the risk that a delay in the process would entail".
